Thieving

In use

It predates crime. Somebody has to invent property before anybody can steal.

What it governs

  • At the start, taking is just taking. Citizens invent the crime by asserting property, and the first thief is named by the first claimant.Charter, Part V — Utility group
  • The mechanic is perception against attention — sleep, distraction, a crowd, the dark — and never permission.
  • The chance of being seen never reaches zero. There is no perfect thief.
  • Being caught is a social event, not a punishment the world hands out.
  • Most thefts are noticed later, and then the question is whether it was lost or taken. Investigation, accusation — and false accusation — become things citizens are good or bad at. The thief's real product is doubt.
  • Nothing carries a stolen mark. Where a thing came from is memory and testimony, so fencing emerges on its own — and you will always know who did it.

What opens, and when

The charter gives Thieving no ladder and no levels. Nothing is drawn here because there is nothing yet to draw.

Not yet

The noticing. A hand already goes into somebody else's arms — within two metres, on a named bearing, against the attention that a sleeping victim, a waking crowd and the dark decide between them — and nothing in the world refuses it or marks what was taken. What is missing is the other half of that: no victim is told, no witness sees, and the floor under the perfect thief waits on a row this world has no table to keep.
