Crafting
In use
The mother skill — the whole stone age lives in here.
What it governs
- Cord, knapped flint, bone needles, baskets. Almost every other skill's first tool is Crafting's.Charter, Part IV — Production group
- Containers are the quiet superpower: bags and baskets raise what a citizen can carry, a sealed pot slows spoilage, and a granary jar is wealth that keeps.
- Cutting a gem can fail, and it fails on the cheap stones — which is how anyone learns.
What it branches into
The branches. Not a ladder of tiers — five separate crafts, each with its own road.
- Leather, with tanning as something to be worked out. Nobody is standing there offering to do it for you.Charter, Part IV — Production group
- Spinning and weaving — wheel and loom, bowstring and cloth. Sailcloth is Crafting's; the ship is Sailing's.
- Pottery: wheel and kiln, and vessels to put things in.
- Glass — sand and soda ash burnt out of seaweed, so it is coastal and late, and it is what finally puts light in a lantern.
- Jewellery: gold and cut gems. The charter puts it exactly where money historically began, and stops short of ruling that it is money.
Everything downstream of it, which is most of this wiki. Four things are made: a stone struck over a heap of stone comes away with an edge that cuts wood and bites a trunk; soft bark worked against a heap of the same twists into a cord, at the crafter's own odds; a cord in the arms over a stone and a straight stick binds a stone lashed to a straight stick — the first tool, and the first thing that reaches one rung further out than a bare hand; and two cords worked together weave a wide basket, the first thing in this world with room in it, which a body carries to take more than its arms alone could close on. Nothing stores the edge. There is no needle, and Crafting makes no vessel — the only vessel in this world is the horn a hunter takes off a beast.
